Millions of people around the world lack access to the resources, security and the autonomy needed to live with dignity. Universal human dignity can only become a reality through respect for human rights. The Amnesty International Report 2008 reveals a world where human rights violations continue to drive and deepen poverty.
Poverty is not just lack of income, however. It is the consequence of decisions made by governments, corporations, and others who hold power. It forces 1 billion people to live in intolerable slum conditions, without access to clean water, sanitation, health care, security or education. Women are denied equal rights to their homes and land, and Indigenous Peoples’ land rights are ignored in favour of commercial interests.
People living in poverty are often ignored, or denied a forum to make their voices heard. It can be even harder for them to hold those who undermine their rights to account. Yet, in recent years there has been unprecedented activism around the world in support of global responsibility for justice and the eradication of poverty.
